Photographer

Chaofan Wan (b. 1991) was born in Hebei, China, and currently lives and works in Tokyo, Japan. In 2013, Wan obtained a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Southwest University Chongqing, China. Pursuing further education, Wan began studying Political Economy at Tokyo Meiji University, earning a master’s degree in 2017. Wan’s academic journey culminated in the completion of a doctoral degree from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2021.

Since 2015, Wan has held numerous solo exhibitions and participated in various group exhibitions in both Japan and China. Wan’s photographic practice often involves photographing the subject matter for a prolonged period of time. In the photography series By the Water (2012 – 2013), Wan photographed the Jialing River in Chongqing, China every day for an entire year. Yes, the River Knows – Arakawa River (2017 – 2022) is another example of a work series where he captured subjects along the Arakawa River — a 173km-long river that stretched from Tokyo all the way through to Saitama Prefecture — for well over 5 years.

Devoting his focus to the tapestry of everyday life and immersing himself in the monotonous mundanity, ardently pursuing the elusive essence of humanity and society through his lens, Wan was honoured with numerous awards throughout his career so far as a photographer, including the prestigious Miki Jun Award in 2023 as well as the Photo City Sagamihara Award in the same year; in 2021, he also received the 44th New Cosmos of Photography Excellence Award. The photographer’s work is included in the public collection of the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts. Wan is the founder of STAIRS PRESS, as well as a member of the Totem Pole Photo Gallery in Tokyo.
