Motoya Kondo was born in Nagoya, Japan, a multifaceted artist known for his roles as a dancer, choreographer, and co-founder of Motimaru Dance Company. Graduating from Keio University Tokyo in 2008, Kondo’s early exposure to the art of Butoh began during his university years when he studied under Yoshito Ohno, the son of the renowned Butoh founder Kazuo Ohno.

In 2010, Kondo co-founded the Motimaru Dance Company in Tokyo, Japan, and he soon embarked on a global journey that significantly influenced his artistic perspective. His travels led him to Bali in 2009, where he studied dance under Agun Anom Putra, followed by explorations in India in 2013, where Kondo experienced a diverse spectrum of traditional and ritual dances like Teyyam, Kathakali and Kathak, it was also when the artist had a critical encounter with Tibetan Buddhism. Subsequent years saw Kondo delving into the traditional dance of Cham (Tibetan) and exploring the art of Flamenco in Seville and Jerez de la Frontera, Spain.

Serving as the bridge between contemporary art practices and age-old wisdom, since 2008, Kondo has been engaged in the practice and study of Eastern contemplative traditions, especially devoting his attention to Tibetan traditions. So far in Kondo’s career, he has been performing and teaching in over 40 cities in Europe, Asia and Australia, including Venezia Biennale 2010, the 9th International Choreography Competition “No Ballet,” and the International Dance Festival Lucky Trimmer 2016.


近藤基弥は、名古屋出身で、ダンサー、振付家、そしてMotimaru Dance Companyの共同設立者として知られる多才なアーティストです。慶應義塾大学に在学中、2008年に舞踏の創始者である大野一雄の息子の大野慶人との出会いをきっかけに近藤の舞踏芸術への傾倒が始まることとなります。

2010年、近藤は東京でMotimaru Dance Companyを共同設立し、またやがて彼の芸術的なビジョンに大きな影響を与える事になる世界各地への旅に出ました。2009年にはバリでアグン·アノム·プトラのもとでダンスを学び、2013年にはインドでティヤム、カタカリ、カタックなど多様な伝統的で儀式的な舞踏に触れ、同時にチベット仏教との深い出会いを経験しています。その後さらに、近藤はネパールにおいてチャム(チベット仏教僧の舞踏)、スペインのセビリアとヘレス·デ·ラ·フロンテラにおいてフラメンコに触れる事になります。

2008年以来、特にチベットの伝統に従い、東洋的内観的探求方法の実践と研究を行ないながら、現代芸術と古代の叡智の架け橋として活動し、これまでにヴェネツィア·ビエンナーレ2010、第9回国際振付コンクール「No Ballet」、国際ダンスフェスティバルLucky Trimmer 2016を含む、ヨーロッパ、アジア、オーストラリアの40以上の都市でパフォーマンスと指導活動を行っています。
