MUGA (b. 1983) is a visual artist with a primary focus on using photography as the creative medium. Now based in Nagoya, Aichi. Once a professional snowboarder, after retiring as an athlete, MUGA began venturing into the field of vintage fashion, whilst studying fine-art photography aspired to become an artist.

An International Photography Award (IPA) winner, with previous experience in exhibiting in group shows in Japan and overseas, SYNONYM curated and produced MUGA’s debut solo exhibition The Colors of My Maze at MOGANA, Kyoto, as a part of the KG+ 2021 satellite event.

Selflessness と訳される 無我 (MUGA) とは禅の考えに代表される、他の存在自体・そのもの自体を認識できる状態のこと。 その探究ともいえるMUGAの作品は、被写体の実像と虚構の狭間を視覚化 / イメージ化することで、ユーモラスかつフェティッシュに、人々の認識や固定観念に対し問いを投じつづけています。

2019年、MUGAは自身の内側へのアプローチとして「窓」を発表。同年オーストリア・Grazで開催されたDesignmonat Grazに参加。同市の自然史美術館にて開かれたグループ展”A double helix of Kinsey”にてアーティストデビュー。2020年には写真、平面芸術に対する人々の認識、虚構へのアプローチとして「Just A Thin Paper」を発表し国際的な写真の祭典IPA photography award「Abstract」部門にて3位を獲得。その後自身と他者の考え、それぞれの主観が生み出す考えの違いに着目した作品「MOSAIC」を作成するなど精力的に活動しています。
