Riko Yasumiya
Batting LALALA Midori

Newly renovated and opened in March 2021, GROWING SPACE is located in Midori-ku, Nagoya, conceived by SYNONYM in collaboration with Batting LALALA, a batting centre franchise based in Aichi, Japan.

Before the renovation, LALALA wanted a change, to inject a new life into a Japanese baseball batting centre. GROWING SPACE reimagines and challenges the notion of what this traditional establishment could offer in modern times, in here, there’s more than baseball, we hope to spark a reaction from children and adults by integrating contemporary art in the space. Here, art will grow with your imagination, we wish to bring out the possibilities where children can engage with artworks that would inspire them.

For the first phase of GROWING SPACE, we invited Riko Yasumiya, an emerging artist graduated from London Central Saint Martin’s who’s hugely passionate about the human body (for our interview with Yasumiya please follow the link). Produced by SYNONYM, Yasumiya created an interactive light installation in the welcoming lobby area of the batting centre, titled neuro−muscular interaction (2021), it replicates the electric signals transmitted to the muscles from the nerves, the lights would generate different patterns depending on the location of the viewer. Yasumiya’s interests and practice lie deep in the study of anatomy, she intends to create another world of expression of how the human body can be perceived, and to communicate with a wider audience via multimedia artworks.

Very literally, GROWING SPACE will grow along with every baseball lover as well as art lover, each year we will present artwork in the space until it is fully grown. We believe that even if you are an adult you would still want to be that carefree child, to be able to speak to your 13-year-old inner self, always stay hungry and curious, let’s continue to expand our horizons together.

GROWING SPACE
